The reader will notice that Frank's letters home were more frequent
during the early days of his life in the Cavalry. This can reasonably
be attributed, in part, to the remoteness of the areas where he was;
to haphazard mail delivery, about which he often complained, along
with any number of other reasons. However, it may also be that not
all of Frank's letters have survived. Indeed, since none of the
letters in this collection which, to the best of my knowledge, are
all that were saved, refer to the death of his brother in September
of 1864, it is likely that there were other letters. Still, those
which have been preserved tell an interesting story of life in the
Cavalry on the western front.
